Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa -- Freshman
Andrea Jansson needed every point of her match, clinching a 4-3 win for the North Dakota women's tennis team over UMKC with a thrilling, three-set victory in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday afternoon.
UND (4-4) earned the doubles point with a pair of wins on the No. 1 and No. 3 court, with Jansson and
Kaede Amano sweeping their opponent, 6-0, before
Isa Sullivan and
Frida Soko held on for a 7-6 victory to give the Fighting Hawks a 1-0 lead.
UMKC rallied in singles play, however, recording three straight wins in straight sets to jump in front, 3-1, and looking to clinch the match. Amano started the rally with a pair of 6-3 scores in the second and third sets from the top spot to cut the deficit to 3-2 before Soko came from behind with a 6-3, 6-4 win after dropping the first frame, 6-3, to tie the contest at three and turn all eyes to Jansson and the fourth court.
There, Jansson followed her teammates by bouncing back after a loss in the first stanza with a 6-4 triumph in the second set to send the match to a tiebreaker to decide the overall winner. In the tiebreak, Jansson and UND won the match, but the team was cited for a premature celebration that caused the point to be replayed. It didn't bother the rookie though, as she won the point again and clinched the 4-3 win for the Hawks.
North Dakota will enjoy a break from action before a Spring Break trip to Orlando, Fla. for a showdown with Fairfield on March 14.
