Soccer announces 2020 captains

GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- University of North Dakota head soccer coach Chris Logan announced the team's leadership group Thursday, naming Ashley Ebeling, Taylor Lange and Karly Sandoval as the team's captains for the 2020 season. The trio look to build on a historic 2019 season that produced the Fighting Hawks' first Division I postseason appearance.

Ebeling, a senior defender, started 17 matches while appearing in 19 contests last year. The Circle Pines, Minn., native tallied three goals for UND and finished fourth in minutes played. She scored the equalizing goal in the 88th minute to force overtime against Hawai'i as UND would go on to defeat the Rainbow Wahine in double overtime, 2-1 (Sept. 8). Two days prior, she tallied her first career goal against Chicago State. Ebeling later accounted for the Fighting Hawks' first goal in the 59th minute during a five-goal second half against Omaha on Oct. 27. She was a co-captain for the Hawks in 2019 as well.

Lange appeared in five matches for North Dakota as a sophomore last season. She made her season-debut in the scoreless duel to open the season against Montana (Aug. 23) and later played a season-high 51 minutes against Chicago State on Sept. 6. The defender helped the Fighting Hawks to two of the team's seven clean sheets last year.

Sandoval, who was a co-captain as a junior, appeared in all 19 matches for the Hawks last season, making 14 starts as a defensive midfielder. She finished fifth in total minutes played, logging 90-or-more minutes in nine games, including a season-high 99 versus Oral Roberts (Oct. 17). Recorded one shot on goal at Purdue Fort Wayne while helping the UND defense to seven shutouts on the season and 13 matches with one goal or fewer.

This leadership group welcomes back 20 returners from a season ago, a campaign that saw North Dakota go 10-8-1, including a 4-4 mark in The Summit League, on the way to the team's first conference tournament appearance in its Division I era. The 2020 schedule will be formally announced in the coming weeks.
