UND Finishes Season at UST & WIU

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – After dropping a 6-0 decision against Denver and a 1-0 double overtime loss to Omaha at Bronson Field last weekend, North Dakota (3-11-1, 1-6-0 Summit) will conclude the 2021 season with road trips to St. Thomas (Oct. 29) and Western Illinois (Oct. 31).

On Friday, the Fighting Hawks will battle the Tommies at 3:30 p.m. (CT) at South Field in St. Paul, Minn. Live stats and a live stream of the game will be available.

UND will conclude its 2021 season on Sunday with the Leathernecks at 1 p.m. (CT) at John MacKenzie Alumni Field in Malcolm, Ill. Live stats of the game will be available.

Most Recently for UND
North Dakota went 0-2 last week with home matches against Denver (12-5, 7-0 Summit) and Omaha (8-6-2, 5-2 Summit).

The Fighting Hawks suffered the 6-0 loss to Denver on Friday at Bronson Field. In the match, 12 underclassmen played for UND, half of them coming from off the bench.

Denver scored two goals in the first half, netting the game-winner in the 26th minute and adding another goal in the 33rd minute to head into halftime with the 2-0 lead. The Pioneers continued firing in the second half, piling up a 21-3 shot advantage by the end of the match and finding the back of the net four times in a span of 19 minutes between the 57th minute and the 76th minute to finish the game with a final tally of 6-0.

North Dakota won the statistic of saves, 7-1, with reserve goalkeeper Abby Ellenberger playing 15 minutes and rejecting three shots. Madi Livingston started at keeper and played 75 minutes, recording four saves. Mara Yapello had the lone shot on goal for UND.

Sunday, the Fighting Hawks dropped a 1-0 decision to the Mavs in double overtime. North Dakota battled Omaha the entire 90 minutes and at the end of regulation, the match was still scoreless. It was not until the 112th minute in the second overtime period that the Mavericks, currently fourth in the Summit League soccer standings, were able to put away the Fighting Hawks with a goal in the sudden victory overtime.

The match ended in the 112th minute when Omaha's Sophia Green headed the ball in from eight yards out for the golden goal and game-winner. It was the only shot attempted in the second period of overtime by either team. Prior to that point, UNO held a 16-6 advantage in shots, which was a 13-5 shot margin at the end of regulation. Bailey McNitt was the most aggressive Hawk offensively with four shots and one shot on goal.

St. Thomas went 0-2 last week, falling in road games at Oral Roberts (5-10-2, 2-5-1 Summit) and Kansas City (6-12, 4-4 Summit).

On Friday, the Tommies were on the losing end of a 2-1 decision to the Golden Eagles. ORU found the back of the net in the 26th minute before the Tommies' Abby Brantner knotted the game up at 1-1 in the 32nd minute. Oral Roberts scored the game-winner in the 85th minute to earn the victory.

In the match, St. Thomas recorded a 21-18 shot advantage, including a 10-8 edge in shots on goal. The Tommies also won the battle of corner kicks, 7-5. Brantner led the charge offensively for UST with seven shots and four shots on frame.

Sunday, St. Thomas also stumbled against Kansas City in a 2-1 match. KC took the 1-0 lead early with a score in the 18th minute and held the lead until the 47th minute when Ellie Tempero blasted a shot from outside the box that sailed through KC's defense and into the back of the net. The match remained even until the 80th minute when Kansas City buried the game-winner.

The Tommies won the statistical category of shots (17-12), shots on goal (10-8) and corner kicks (9-4). Sofia Caballero netted three shots (all on goal), followed by Tempero with three shots (two on goal).

Series History vs. UST
Friday will mark the first time the Fighting Hawks and Tommies will meet on the soccer field.

Jenna Lundgren scored the lone goal in Friday's victory, scoring the game-winner in the 51st minute off a pass from Cassidy Grunewald. Amy Andrews led the Leathernecks in scoring attempts with four shots and two shots on goal.

Western Illinois recorded the edge in shots (12-9) and corner kicks (3-0) against Kansas City. The Leathernecks also won the statistical category of shots on goal by a 9-3 margin.

Sunday, the Leathernecks went up 2-0 early over the Golden Eagles with goals from Andrews in the 14th minute and Angie Knies in the 25th minute. WIU held the 2-0 advantage until the 72nd minute when ORU found the back of the net. Western Illinois held on in the final 18 minutes for the 2-1 victory. Bridget Schuler led the team in shots with four (one shot on goal).

Oral Roberts held a 12-11 shot advantage in the game, while Western Illinois won the battle of shots on goal, 5-4. The Leathernecks also had one more corner kick than the Golden Eagles (5-4).

Series History vs. Western Illinois
North Dakota leads the series 5-2-1. Most recently in the series, UND edged WIU 2-1 at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. Hannah Olson put the Hawks on the board first in the eighth minute for her first goal of the 2020-21 season and then assisted Mara Yapello in the 23rd minute to put UND up 2-0. The only goal for WIU came in the 53rd minute when Jenna Lundgren found the back of the net for her first score of the 2020-21 season.

Statistically, Western Illinois held the edge in shots (15-14) and saves (6-5), while North Dakota earned the advantage in shots on frame (8-6) and set pieces (5-4).
