GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota women's tennis team made it a perfect weekend on the courts for the Fighting Hawks against Oral Roberts, taking down the Golden Eagles by a 6-1 score on Saturday evening from Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D.Â
"We are learning how to win matches with more than just our tennis talents, and that is something that good players and teams know how to do," said UND head coach Tom Boysen. "We definitely played well for parts of this match, no doubt, but I am more pleased about the other things we did well."
UND (6-8, 2-0 Summit League) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on the doubles courts, posting a pair of 6-3 victories from the No. 2 and 3 courts.
Nore Heinitz and
Nyah Kauders got things rolling as the middle duo before
Angela Georgieva and
Jule Schulte closed out the strong start in two-person play from the bottom position.Â
"We fought hard and we competed well," said Boysen. "We moved well and hustled. We played thoughtful, intelligent tennis. More often than not, these things matter as much or more than forehands, backhands, serves and volleys."
The Fighting Hawks kept that strong play rolling into singles play, stretching the lead to 2-0 from the No. 2 court on a 6-1, 6-4 victory from
Sapir Sela before Schulte put the match in a clinching position with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at the fifth court.Â
Heinitz made it a perfect 3-for-3 start in one-on-one action with a pair of 6-4 scores from the No. 3 position to clinch the overall match win for the hosts while
Andrea Jansson increased the lead to 5-0 with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 battle in three sets at the fourth spot.Â
Oral Roberts jumped on the board with a three-set victory from the No. 1 court, but Georgieva closed out the 6-1 score by rallying for a tiebreaker win over her own at the bottom position, 3-6, 7-5, 10-5.Â
"Oral Roberts is a good team, and we should gain confidence from this victory," said Boysen. "We are excited to hit the road for three matches over spring break before resuming Summit League matches later this month."
