SIOUX FALLS, S.D.? The University of North Dakota men's and women's golf teams combined their efforts for a 513-447 victory over South Dakota in the first-ever USD vs. UND Cup this past weekend.
The tournament was held with a similar scoring format to the Ryder Cup, where two points are awarded for winning a hole, one point for a tie and four points for winning the match.
In the opening round on Saturday at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion, S.D., the players were put into teams of two with a four-ball format where the best score from each team was used for the hole. The UND women finished with an 80-40 lead while the men trailed 119-81, combining for 160-160 tie after the first day of competition.
Moving to the Prairie Green Golf Course in Sioux Falls, S.D., for the second round on Sunday, the players set up into an individual head-to-head match play where the UND men edged USD, 203-197, while the UND women outscored USD, 150-90, to capture the title.
“We're excited to be the champions of the first UND-USD Cup,” head coach Dan Frei said. “The team matchup was a lot of fun for our players. We sometimes can get burned out by the grind of stroke play every tournament and it is great preparation for Division I national golf as the national tournament is now held in match-play format.”
