Goodyear, Ariz. -- Freshman Jenna Janu turned in a pair of rounds in the 70's to pace the University of North Dakota women's golf team in the opening 36 holes of the Bobcat Spring Invitational.
Janu opened the tournament with a 77 (+5) on her first loop around the Golf Club of Estrella, then posted a 79 (+7) to end her day tied for 31st in the 98-player field.
Janu's efforts helped UND register a 664 (+88) in the opening 36 holes and sit in 15th in the 17-team field. Seattle and Wyoming share the team lead after respective scores of 600 (+24) with 18 more holes to go on Tuesday at the par-72, 6-305-yard layout in the Arizona desert.
Senior Olivia Knutson had her best 18 in the first round as she an 80 (+8) before being one of four UND golfers to card an 86 (+14) in their second rounds.
Individuals Haily Abel and Hanna Peterson tied for the second and third best 36-hole totals by a UND golfer with a pair of 165's. Peterson opened with an 80 (+8) to match Knutson in round one, while Abel equaled her season-best with an 82 (+10) in the first round.
A pair of Big Sky golfers sit a top the individual leaderboard. Northern Colorado's Kala Keltz owns a one-shot lead in the race for medalist honors after going 71-71 to post 142 (-2) in her opening two rounds. Southern Utah's Taylor Viquelia is second with a 143 (-1) total.
The Thunderbirds, who are one of seven Big Sky teams competing in the event, are in third after day one and only three strokes off the pace set by Seattle and Wyoming. UND will conclude its regular season with third-round play on Tuesday.
