Janu snags top-10 finish at Big Sky Championship

Boulder City, Nev. -- North Dakota junior Jenna Janu posted the highest finish ever by a Fighting Hawk at the 2018 Big Sky Championship, finishing in a tie for 10th as the 54-hole event wrapped up on Sunday at the Boulder Creek Golf Club.

Janu closed with a 75 (+3) and her three-round total of 222 (+6) also bettered the program's Division I league-tournament record she had shared with Sadie Martin when that duo both shot a 223 (+7) at the 2016 Big Sky Championship on the same course.

Sophomore Ally Rogers and Benedikte Pettersen both broke 80 for the first time to help the Fighting Hawks close with a 313 and tie for 10th with Weber State (944; +80). Rogers and Pettersen each shot a 78 (+6) and had a pair of birdies to tie Janu for the team lead in that category on Sunday. Junior Hanna Peterson also had a pair of birdies and the lone eagle on the week for the Fighting Hawks as she finished with an 83 (+11). Peterson was second among the UND golfers, tying for 44th with a 239 (+23) total.

"Jenna played really well all week and it was nice to see her playing her best at our conference championship," UND head coach Natalie Martinson said. "As a team, we played a lot more consistent today and got some nice production from Ally (Rogers) and Benna (Pettersen), who both shot their best rounds of the tournament."

Rogers finished 50th (241; +25) and Pettersen took 56th (248; +32). Freshman Ashlyn Guggisberg finished 55th in her first league tournament appearance, posting a 247 (+31) total after registering an 82 (+10) on her final loop in the desert.

Idaho (866; +2) captured the team title in convincing fashion as the Vandals finished with the best round of the tournament posting a 283 (-5). They were led by Sophie Hausmann, who took medalist honors with a 206 (-10). Hausmann shot a final round 68 (-4) and defeated teammate Michelle Kim (210; -6) by four strokes. Sacramento State (876; +12) held off Portland State 879; +15) for runner-up honors

This was the final competition for UND as a member of the Big Sky Conference, ending a six-year run in the league. The Fighting Hawks will join the Summit League for women's golf starting next fall.
