A native of Bismarck, N.D., Steve Burian came to UND after graduating from Bismarck Century High School in 1986.
He immediately became a Fighting Sioux track and field standout, lettering four times and earning four All-America honors in the shot put and also competing in the discus.
The first of those honors came in 1988, when Burian finished sixth at the NCAA Division II indoor meet. He placed fourth in the 1989 indoor meet, and fourth again in the 1990 indoor meet, with a final finish of second at the NCAA outdoor championships in 1990.
Burian finished in the top three in the discus at all four of his career NCC outdoor championships. He was named a first team GTE-CoSIDA All-American in both 1989 and 1990. He was a three-time NCC All-Academic honoree (1988-90) and NCAA postgraduate scholarship recipient.
Burian was a team captain in 1989 and 1990 and was the team's most valuable in field events in 1987, '88, '89 and '90. He received the team's "Hardest Worker Award" in 1990 and the team's "Sioux Pride Award" in 1990.
Burian graduated from UND in 1990 with a degree in civil engineering, and in 1992, he received his master's of engineering in civil engineering with an environmental emphasis (also from UND).
He is currently the CEO of Advanced Engineering and Environmental Services, Inc. (AE2S).
Burian has been the recipient of numerous professional honors and UND honored him with its "Young Achievement Award" in 2005.
Burian has served as president of the UND Letterwinner's Association and is currently the co-chairman of the Fighting Sioux Track and Field and Cross Country Alumni Committee. He is also active as a volunteer coach and meet official.
Burian and his wife Barbara reside in Grand Forks with their children Tiahna and Tyler.
