Mike Ewing is a native of Sioux Falls, S.D. He came to UND in the fall of 1985 and graduated in 1989 with a degree in psychology. He later went on to earn his masters degree in counseling in 1992 and doctorate in counseling psychology in 1996, both from UND.
While at UND, Ewing was one of the building blocks to the success of the men's swimming program. In 1986, his first season, UND won its first ever North Central Conference championship in men's swimming. The next two season were also championship seasons in which Ewing served as a captain and was voted Most Valuable Swimmer. He went on to claim 14 NCC individual and relay championships in helping UND build its success. The Fighting Sioux have gone on to win 16 of the last 18 NCC titles. He was also a 7-time All-American.
In the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, Ewing was a three-time NCC champion in 1986, 1987 and 1988. Ewing placed fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Championships in 1988. He returned to nationals the following year and placed third with a time of :56.95, ranking him third in the UND history in the 100-yard breaststroke. Ewing also placed eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke at the 1988 National Championships. His fastest time of 2:07.66 places him fourth in the UND history.
Ewing excelled in the classroom as well. He was a three-time member of the NCC At-Large Academic team from 1987-89. In 1988 and 1989 he received recognition as a member of the College Swim Coaches of America All-Academic Team.
He credits UND for fostering his development and paving the way to his current career.
Currently, Mike is the director of Counseling Services at Saint John's University. He also is the director of Counseling and Health Education at the College of Saint Benedict. Mike and his wife, Kristin (McClockling), a former UND swimmer, reside in St. Cloud, Minn., with their children Zayda and Grady.
