Tom Montgomery, a native of Grand Forks, came to UND in the fall of 1986 and graduated with a degree in business management in 1990.
At UND, Montgomery played shortstop and was a four-year letterwinner for the Fighting Sioux baseball team. He is UND's all-time leader in stolen bases for a career (72). He ranks second in career assists (386), fourth in batting average (.356) and RBI (123), and fifth in home runs (25) and runs scored (123). Montgomery is also the holder of three of the top 10 season records for stolen bases. In Montgomery's four seasons at UND, the Fighting Sioux went 91-90 and finished fourth in the North Central Conference playoffs in the 1987 and 1990.
As a freshman, Montgomery joined the team and finished the season leading the team in runs scored (34) and was an All-NCC selection. In 1988, as a sophomore, he developed into one of the team's premier hitters and led the team in home runs (11), RBI (28) and stolen bases (18).
During his junior season of 1989, Montgomery batted .416, which ranks seventh on the UND single-season records. He also led the team in runs (44), hits (57), doubles (9), and stolen bases (22). The 22 stolen bases is a tie for the second highest season total in UND history. He was selected All-NCC for the second time.
Elected a captain for his senior season, Montgomery finished his career with a third All-NCC selection and was voted the NCC Player of the Year.
After his days at UND, Montgomery continued his athletic career in professional fastpitch softball. He was a member of the International Softball Congress (ISC) world team in 1994, 1997 and 2000. The 2000 team went on to win the ISC World Championship. Montgomery won silver medals at the 1998 and 1999 Pan-American Games and a bronze at the 2000 games.
Tom is currently general manager and partner of Southgate, Inc. and Eagles Crest Grill of Grand Forks. He and his wife Michelle (UND graduate), reside in Grand Forks with their children Logan, Brock, Dane and Drew.
