In her two seasons at UND, Whitney Meier made a lasting impression on the Fighting Sioux record books.
She left ranked 18th all-time in scoring with 1,057 points. She is only one of the two players to accomplish that feat in just two seasons.
On Dec. 9, 1990, against Barry University, Meier set three new single-game records: most points in a game (45), most free throws (17) and most attempted (22). UND needed every point in an 88-87 win.
Meier came to UND after two seasons at Louisiana State University and made an instant improvement to the Fighting Sioux in the 1989-90 season.
The team went 27-4 and won the North Central Conference regular season title with a 16-2 mark. UND advanced to the Elite Eight before being knocked out by the eventual national runners-up, Cal Poly Pomona, 67-64. Meier gained All-NCC honors after finishing the season averaging 17.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest. She was also named to the All-NCC Academic team.
During her senior season, the team again won the NCC regular season title, going 17-1 en route to a 28-2 overall record. The team didn't advance as far in the postseason, losing in the North Central Regional Championship game.
Meier finished the season averaging 16.9 points an 5.2 rebounds per game. For a second consecutive season, she was named to the All-NCC and All-NCC Academic teams. She also became the second UND women's basketball player to be named All-American, the first being Durene Heisler Frydenlund. Meier was also the 1991 Hanes Woman-of-the-Year.
